Netflix.com is an American provider of films and television programs, primarily by means of unlimited online streaming of content, but it also offers a DVD rental by post service in the US. As of January 2014, Netflix streaming services are available in North & South America, the Caribbean, UK, Northern Europe, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and the Netherlands.
Netflix was founded in California in 1997 by Marc Randolph, who was inspired to found the business after having to pay $40 dollars in fines when he was late in returning the film Apollo 13. From the start it was a ‘hire DVDs by post’ business, initially on a pay per rental basis. By early 2000 it had dropped this model in favour of unlimited rentals for a flat monthly fee, with no late fees-ever.
From early 2007, Netflix started a ‘video on demand’ via the internet service. This has steadily grown and now accounts for the majority of Netflix’s income. In September 2010, Netflix began its expansion into international markets when it launched a streaming only video on demand service in Canada. Soon it launched in Latin America, then Europe. Internationally, Netflix is a streaming only business, with DVD by post only available in the US.

From humble beginnings, Netflix has grown very quickly. In 2000, only 3 years after its launch, Netflix was offered to Blockbuster, who declined to purchase the fledgling company. From then on the company has gone from strength to strength. In 2012, the company had over 2000 employees and revenues of over $3.6 billion. Its net income was only $17 million; however in a rapidly growing company low profits are to be expected (just look at Amazon for many years).
As of late 2013, Netflix had over 40 million subscribers worldwide. Perhaps even more telling, independent reports suggest that Netflix accounts for around 30% of all the country’s internet traffic, quite a staggering statistic!
Netflix operates a similar service of video on demand in all the countries it operates, but there are some differences in pricing as well as the content that is available. The films and TV series that are available vary significantly from country to country depending on licensing deals that Netflix has struck with film and television companies.
In the US, Netflix arguably concentrates slightly more on TV series than films, and some of the top TV series currently available include Breaking Bad, Family Guy, How I Met Your Mother, The Walking Dead and Doctor Who. Netflix has also started commissioning its own exclusive content, including House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, as well as the fourth series of Arrested Development. This is likely to continue in future.
Interestingly, the content available to you depends on your physical location rather than the country you pay your subscription in. So for instance if you live in Canada or the UK but visit the US, while there you will be able to watch all content available on the American Netflix. That may be a rare event for most but is an interesting thing to remember, just in case!
